PURA VIDA
The good life awaits us all! If you’re willing to take a short flight to Los Angeles from Portland and then a six-hour flight to Liberia, you can experience it for yourself. Simple enough, right? The good life—or Pura Vida—begins when you arrive in Costa Rica. Having visited this oasis in Central America a few times, I’ve come to understand why they use this phrase to describe life here.
What Does the Good Life Look Like?
Have you ever stopped to think about what a good life truly means? Most of us go through our daily routines, reacting to the ups and downs, believing we’re merely passengers in life. We accept things as they come, thinking, “It is what it is.”
For me, Costa Rica has become a destination for my version of the good life. This vibrant country offers nature unlike anything in North America, a relaxed vibe, warm people, and, of course, boogie boarding. It’s a place to refresh, recharge, and gain perspective on life.
Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone: Boogie Boarding
Let me start with my newfound passion: boogie boarding! A few trips ago, I decided to try this wave-friendly activity, despite some serious reservations. First, I don’t know how to swim. Second, I’m risk averse. Third, my comfort zone is my happy place. You can imagine my reluctance to give boogie boarding a shot. But now, I’m hooked. It’s taught me some valuable lessons about life and pushing past my fears:
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
The ocean is always moving, and a big wave is often lurking. If you’re not paying attention, it’ll leave you with a mouthful of salt water or, worse, a swim trunk full of sand. Staying present and observant is key. (Also, pro tip: hold your breath when that wave hits. Trust me.)
Learn Like a Child
Learning something new requires humility. As a coach, I’m not always the best student. But taking advice from my wife—an excellent swimmer and occasional surfer—has been invaluable. Listening to her expertise (and maybe even following it) has made me a better boogie boarder. There’s a lesson here about embracing guidance and being open to learning. (Also, apparently, there’s a fine line between humility and flailing. I’m working on it.)
Love the Good Rides
Much like life, boogie boarding has its highs and lows. Sometimes you miss the wave and feel the disappointment, but those moments make the WOW rides even sweeter. There’s nothing like catching a wave perfectly and riding it to shore at exhilarating speed. A good ride deserves a hearty “yeehaw!”—or so my “coach” insists. (It’s become our unofficial family motto.)
The Warmth of Costa Rican People
The people we’ve met in Costa Rica have been a highlight of our visits. Whether it’s our expat hosts, Joelle and Simon, or the locals, their kindness and warmth shine through. They’re always ready with a smile and a friendly “Hola,” “Buenos días,” or “Gracias.”
My attempts to reciprocate with phrases like “De nada” or “Mucho gusto” might not always hit the mark, but the effort is appreciated. I’ve learned to laugh at my limited Spanish (“No hablo español” is my go-to), and I’ve resolved to improve my language skills—eventually. (Or at least learn how to order gelato properly.)
Perspective and Gratitude
Spending time in Costa Rica always brings perspective. It’s easy to forget how much we have in our everyday lives. The relaxation that comes with vacation allows me to reflect on what Pura Vida means for me. Am I living the good life or my best life? If not, why not? What am I allowing to derail my journey? What are you allowing?
Too often, we focus on what we lack instead of appreciating what we already have. Taking stock of life’s gifts is a vital step toward embracing Pura Vida.
Nature’s Wonders
Costa Rica’s natural beauty is nothing short of extraordinary. During our trips, we’ve encountered iguanas, toucans, macaws, crocodiles, and our favorites, monkeys. We also had some run-ins with “killer grasshoppers”—fearsome, four-inch-long creatures with fangs that love latching onto humans. While these terrifying insects struck fear into the men, the women, led by our brave host Joelle, were unbothered and often came to our rescue. (We’re talking full-on action hero status. Someone cue the theme music.) That’s a story for another day.
Finding Pura Vida
Ultimately, Pura Vida can happen anywhere. It’s about choosing to live the good life—being thankful for the people in your life and the adventures you take. It’s about finding joy in the present moment and asking yourself what’s holding you back from living your best life.
I believe the person with the best stories wins in the end. So, find your own Pura Vida before it’s too late.
